1. Frequently Asked Questions

If you are new to club cycling then hopefully this will answer some of the more common questions. If you want any more information then please get in touch through our Contacts page or on the Forum. There is also some useful information on the British Cycling site on getting into road cycling and its various forms.

Do I need to be a member to come on a club run?

No, in fact we encourage anyone who is thinking of joining to come along first and try it out.

Am I fit enough?

As long as you can ride for 40-50 miles or so in 3-4 hours or so then you'll be fine. The club runs are social and even if we split up on a climb we wait at the top to get the group back together.

Where do you meet?

The newcomers steadier run meets at the Millenium Hall , Muirhead on Saturday at 9:15am. A more experienced group meet on Saturdays at Camperdown Park Gates at 9am or very occasionally at Baldovie Toll at 9:30am. On Sundays also at  Camperdown Park Gates  at 9:30am. Details of the weekend runs will be posted on this web site.

How long are the club runs

It does vary depending on season.  The newcomer Saturday run is typically around 40-45 miles at 14-15 mph average.Typically the more experienced winter runs are around 50 miles at about 16-17mph average   In the summer the runs tend to be longer, typically 60-70 miles and a little faster, around 17-18mph average. We are usually back to Dundee around 1:30pm. If you are new to cycling in a group you will be pleasantly surprised how much further and faster you go in a group than when solo.

I'm new to riding in a Group, what's the etiquette?

Don't worry if you are not used to riding in a group. First off our runs don't have massive groups and someone will let you know the ropes, here are some "Do's and Don'ts". Don't worry about sitting in and not taking a turn at the front, plenty of time to do that if you continue coming out with us. The front of the group will point out / shout out any potholes, obstacles etc and when cars are approaching from the rear or head on.

What if I get lost?

Don't worry, we get lost sometimes too. We don't leave anyone behind, someone will accompany you back to the group / cafe / home.

What do I need to bring?

Other than a road bike, bring some cash for the cafe stop and a spare tube or two in case you get a puncture.

Do I need an expensive bike and kit?

Definitely not! Although some of us do, some of us don't although we recommend you have a working road bike and some cycling specific clothes.

What's with the leg shaving?

Can't have a cycling FAQ without this one, as it's one for the most common questions you get once non-cyclists know you're a cyclist :-) Some of us do, some of us don't and it's up to you whether you want to, it's certainly not a prerequisite for coming along or joining the club.

How do I join the Club.

Come along on a few club runs, then if you want to join come along to the Thursday Club Meeting (see Join Us) to sign up. Membership fees are a bargain £15 p.a.
