Parked up at around 5:55 in Kirriemuir and waited for Ian who rolled up a little after 6:00am then to discover his back wheel had a puncture! Eventually started around 10-15 mins after the main group had left but Jim F had waited for us, gent that he is. But barely had we started and we were off course for a small detour…! Anyhow on a splendid day weather wise, Jim and Ian towed me along to the first control point at Strachan. Then onward, however managed to go off course again through Banchory but this time managed to avert what could have been a bit of a disaster as we were heading to Aberdeen on the North Deeside Road.. As the road took in some brilliant scenery things did not seem so bad at that point albeit my legs were well stuffed..! A cafe stop at Oyne and then another at Dufftown it started to dawn on us that there was still a long way to go. Once again Jim and Ian (joined by Phil Morris in parts) towed me to Tomintoul but the run in from there to Braemar was erm……………. a heart breaker and I felt completely finished at Braemar and was ready to bale out.. However words of encouragement from the other guys who we had joined …Kenny, Steve, Kate etc and then some more food in in the form of beans on toast, managed to get back on and finish. A very well organised event – low key and friendly… great bridie by the way at the end. A long way and a long day – thank goodness the weather was as good as it was.
Good turn out in the sun, as 17 of us left the Gates. Due to various reasons, we decided to skip the Moors today and head over the Hill O’ 3 Cairns, Drumore and on to Peel Farm.
Rolled along at a nice steady social pace through Newtyle, Meigle, on to Alyth and over the hills. Spectacular views in the sunshine today. Bit windy on the way over the Hill O’ 3 Cairns but we got a bit of a tail over Drumore.
A few turned to carry on non stop, with 9 of us stopping at Peel Farm for much needed coffee and cake.
Then we split in two with 4 of us going home the Alyth, Meigle way and the others heading to Kirri.
A good run in nice weather.
There were 9 of us setting off from the Gates, including new guy Craig, coming over from the dark side of triathon 🙂
Plan was to go to Invergowrie, Washhouse Brae, Scone, Meigle and home. No cafe stop and some bit-and-bit to get the legs going.
Rolled along past Invergowrie and then the first stretch of efforts, into a strong headwind. Kept a good pace out to Errol and on to Glencarse. Lionel turned off half way up the Brae, with the rest continuing to Scone. Just as we hit the main road and cranked the pace up again (with a welcome tailwind) Neil C punctured and after that Bill and Neil kept a steadier pace while the 6 of us blasted to Meigle in record time (for me anyway).
Took things a wee bit easier through Meigle and up pitknappy and on the run, just before Tinkies Brae, Craig got a double puncture!
No cafe stops, but 2 p stops for punctures and back home in time for lunch. A good effort from all and well done Craig, hope to see you again.
Here’s the stats:
